Container homes a growing builder trend in Perth

When IT consultant John Williams decided to ditch suburbia and build a new family home he wanted to create an "out of the box" property.

He and wife Dawn are building a two-storey house out of five 40ft recycled shipping containers in Lower Chittering, 60km northeast of Perth.

Costing about $130,000 to build, the home is expected to be completed within three months.

Container homes are popular in Europe and the trend is hitting Perth with a number of start-up companies advertising converted containers as affordable housing options.

"I wanted to have a home that would look unique. It's pretty liberating to be able to pull out the angle grinder whenever you decide you want a new window," he said.
